Description:
Thursday April 3, 6:30 p.m. The Ghost Metropolis of Mossmain. Red Lodge author John Clayton will tell the tale of a hoped for "Garden City" that busted before it could boom. Envisioned by Billings entrepreneur Preston B. Moss, the unique community--located at today's East Laurel I-90 exit--would have fully integrated agriculture and urban life. Clayton is an independent journalist, essayist, and corporate ghostwriter whose most recent book is Stories from Montana's Enduring Frontier.

Thursday April 10, 6:30 p.m. Adventure Tales of Montana's Last Frontier. According to historian and author Gary A. Wilson, Montana's legendary frontier lingered longest in the Milk River Country--the wind-swept "Hi-Line" along the Canadian border. In his new book, Adventure Tales of Montana's Last Frontier, Wilson chronicles the region's panoramic past that featured Native Americans, fur traders, soldiers, pioneering women, itinerant preachers, cattle barons, and outlaws. Wilson will share stories about both notable characters and lesser-known figures who made history in towns like Landusky, Havre, Glasgow, and Chinook, as well as on ranches, at Fort Assiniboine, and along the outlaw trail.

Thursday April 17, 6:30 p.m. Reimagining Main Street: Collaboration, Revitalization and Tourism's Role in Montana. Tash Wisemiller--Coordinator of the Montana Main Street Program--will explore how that program is taking a comprehensive approach to downtown revitalization, enabling communities to achieve broad goals in economic development, planning, historic preservation, and tourism. Wisemiller will include an overview of the program, provide examples of communities proactively addressing both challenge and opportunity, and illustrate the historical context of heritage tourism in Montana.

Thursday April 24, 6:30 p.m. Preserving a Montana Senator's Image: The Lee Metcalf Photograph and Film Collection Project. In 2012, the Montana Historical Society received a two-year grant to organize, describe, and preserve Senator Lee Metcalf's photograph and film collections. Matthew Peek, photograph archivist for the project, will discuss the background of Senator Metcalf and the history of the two collections. Peek will: detail interesting aspects of Senator Metcalf's work and life; show rarely seen photographs and film segments from the collection; and discuss the type of work archivists have to do to be able to provide the public with collections of primary historic materials.
