Helena Community Connections’ Bridges program will host Marsha A. Goetting, Ph.D., CFP®, CFCS, professor and extension family economics specialist at Montana State University, Bozeman. Dr. Goettings will again present estate planning information in three different sessions all on the same day, Thursday, April 18, 2019. All sessions will be held at 2330 East Broadway, Helena. All facilities are handicapped accessible. There is no fee to participate. Bridges programs are life enrichment for those over fifty. Pre-registration at www.bridgeshcc.org is required. Here is how the sessions will be presented:

Estate Planning: The basics all Montanans should know: 9 a.m. to – 12 noon
If you think estate planning is a snooze topic then you haven’t been to one of Dr. Marsha Goetting’s presentations. She has a reputation for making estate planning interesting. She also keeps participants actively involved by offering opportunities to answer questions using electronic response clickers. Dr. Goetting uses her appreciation of Montana wildflowers with expertise in estate planning to give Helena and surrounding area residents an exciting program called Wildflower Reflections: Families and Legacies, Challenging Decisions also subtitled estate planning, the basics all Montanans should know. Plan to attend the session on April 18 from 9 a.m. to twelve noon. You will learn who will receive your property if you pass away without a written will. You will discover how you can avoid probate with the Montana estate planning tools of payable upon death designations, transfer upon death designations, and beneficiary deeds. Dr. Goetting will also highlight a Montana statute that allows you to distribute items that do not have a title.

Estate Planning: Wills, Trusts, Probate, Personal Representative 1 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
For those who want to learn more about estate planning an afternoon session is being offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dr. Goetting will explore when a will or a trust has control over your property and when neither one does. Testamentary trusts will be discussed as well as when probate is required. The duties of a personal representative will be outlined. The latest rules for gifting and the federal estate tax will be explore. Be prepared to learn information that will help your family with legacy planning.

Estate Planning: Married/Common Law estate planning tips. Learn how MSAs can be your legacy along with carry-over and stepped-up basis in property, and letter of last instruction from 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. For those who have already attended Dr. Goetting’s presentations this third session is offered from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Dr. Goetting explores estate planning aspects for married and common law couples. She will show you how a Montana Medical Care Savings can become a legacy. The difference between carry-over basis and stepped-up basis in property after death will be explained. She will outline how to write a letter of last instruction for heirs.
