Philosophy Walk: Place, Climate Change & Urban Design
10:00 AM
Helena
Philosophy Walk: Place, Climate Change & Urban Design Description:
In this walk led by Dennis McCahon and Patrick Judge, we’ll explore the connections between Helena’s “sense of place,” climate change, and urban design. Some of the things we’ll be considering include:

Sense of Place & Urban Environmentalism
-- What is urban environmentalism
-- Space vs. anti-space
-- Some key ingredients (as informed by our previous events)

City Sustainability Plans/Measures/Challenges
-- Sustainability & resilience
-- Helena’s history & current state (overview)
-- Challenges posed by climate change & its relationship to urban planning/design

Future Development/Planning in Helena
-- What is walkable (carbon neutral) urban design in Helena? Are there other things we should also be thinking about relative to urban design and climate change?
-- How in practical terms does it tie in with thinking about place?
-- Helena’s future vision re urban planning (relative to challenges posed by climate change)

Our group will meet at the intersection of Main & Placer. From there we'll begin our walk and make 4 stops w/discussions at Women's Park, Great Northern Town Center, Centennial Park, and then (our ending location) Carroll College (to see some energy demos in the Civil Engineering Lab).
