Description:
Did you know that those iconic National Park posters from the 1940s were almost lost to history?
Explore the fascinating story behind the New Deal-era WPA posters that put hundreds of American artists back to work and helped to lift the country out of the Depression. In this workshop, graphic artist Luke Duran will discuss the history of WPA-style posters, and why they maintain their appeal in popular culture. Then we will deconstruct one of the national park posters down to its essential design elements. We’ll discuss visual imagery, color, composition and typography. You will then apply what you learned to design and compose your own WPA-style poster! In this hands-on workshop you’ll assemble your design using the old-school method of mechanical pasteup. You will use traditional tools like X-acto knives, waxers and hand-cut forms, in a manner similar to how design and layout was performed before computers revolutionized the graphic design industry. Join us for this fun and unique creativity workshop!
