Description:
An Oasis of Calm in Mid-December's Madness -- A Traditional Advent Lessons and Carols Service Sunday, December 9

The combined choirs of Carroll College, the Cathedral of St. Helena and Musikanten Montana will offer a traditional Advent Service of 9 Lessons and Carols at 4 pm, Sunday, Dec. 9 at the Cathedral of St. Helena.

Patterned after the King's College historic celebration at Cambridge, England, the most widely observed Advent service in the world, the service includes 9 scripture readings -- from the creation of the Garden of Eden, to the Prophets and John the Baptist, and finally the Angel Gabriel's appearance to Mary -- which will be read by members of the Carroll College and Cathedral community.

Following each Lesson is an anthem by the choir or a carol sung by all. Musikanten director Kerry Krebill will lead the combined choirs, and Cathedral organist Jason Phillips will play for the congregational singing. Featured music this year includes works of Palestrina, Hammerschmidt, Mendelssohn, Joubert, Poston's "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" (a favorite repeated every year) and Herbert Howells' dramatic setting of the Magnificat.

This Advent program is presented as a gift to the Helena Community. There is no admission charge -- the service is free and open to all.
