Thursdays at Helena College will host Professor Kelly Cline as he presents The Mystery of the Hot Jupiters. A few months ago, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to two astronomers who in 1995 first discovered an exoplanet, a planet orbiting around another star. The planet they discovered is a big gas giant, like Jupiter, yet it orbits its star closer than Mercury orbits our Sun, making the planet very hot. This planet is what we call a hot Jupiter. Astronomers have now discovered over 4,000 exoplanets orbiting other stars in our Milky Way galaxy, and hundreds of these are hot Jupiters.
